What a real full body PPF wrap actually covers

Full body PPF is exactly what it sounds like — every painted surface on the vehicle wrapped in self-healing polyurethane film. But shops use the phrase to mean wildly different things, so let's define it the way we do it at Private Label Motorsports.

A true full body PPF at PLM covers: the hood (full, not partial), roof, front fascia and bumper, both front fenders, both front and rear doors, mirror caps, A-pillars, both quarter panels, the rear bumper, the deck lid or tailgate, the fuel door, and the door cups. On trucks that also includes the bed sides, bed rails, and tailgate. On SUVs the roof and D-pillars are wrapped. On sports cars the rocker panels and lower sills are included because those are the areas that catch the most stone chips at highway speed.

What full body PPF does NOT typically cover on our standard package: the roof of hatchbacks that use panoramic glass (there's nothing to protect), the underside of side skirts (not visible), the interior of door jambs (unless you upgrade to Track Pack), and the wheels or brake calipers (those are a separate ceramic coating service). If any of those matter to you, they're add-ons and we price them out before you commit.

Every full body wrap uses film from the Pure PPF lineup we install — Pure Xtreme at the premium 8-mil self-healing tier, Pure Plus or Pure Ultra in the mid-tier, and Pure Shield at the standard tier. Every Pure film is a self-healing hydrophobic PPF with a 10-year manufacturer warranty and is transferable to the next owner if the vehicle is sold within the warranty window.

Every PPF coverage package explained

PPF coverage is a menu, not a single product. Here's what each level actually protects — and what it doesn't. Priced from least to most complete.

Partial-front PPF: a vehicle-specific quote for selected leading-edge areas. Confirm the bumper, partial hood and partial fender boundaries, and understand which panels remain uncovered.

Full-front PPF: confirm full hood, fenders, bumper and mirror coverage in your written quote. Headlights, A-pillars, roof edges and other details must be explicitly included rather than assumed.

Additional impact-zone coverage: ask about rockers, door cups, rear arches and other areas relevant to your driving. The written quote specifies each panel, edge and exclusion.

Full-body PPF: request a vehicle-specific quote identifying covered panels, edges, trim and exclusions. Film finish, preparation and applicable written warranty terms must be confirmed.

Custom PPF coverage: roof, hood, jambs and other selected areas are quoted individually after the shop reviews the vehicle, finish and intended result.

Why San Antonio drivers need full body PPF specifically

San Antonio is one of the most punishing climates in the country for automotive paint. Not because of any single factor, but because the factors stack on top of each other and never let up.

Sun intensity. San Antonio averages 220+ days of full sun per year, with UV index readings above 10 for the entire summer. UV degradation is what makes clearcoat fail — it breaks down the top layer of paint until it starts to haze, chalk, and eventually peel. PPF is a UV-stable barrier that takes the hit instead of your paint. Every film we install is engineered for tropical and desert sun exposure.

Highway rock chips. Loop 1604, 281, IH-10, and IH-35 all have long stretches of resurfaced concrete and open aggregate that constantly kicks up gravel and small stones. If you commute from Stone Oak, Fair Oaks Ranch, or New Braunfels into central San Antonio, you drive 40–80 miles a day at 65–75 mph on the exact kind of road surface that chips paint. Full body PPF is the only real defense.

Hill Country back roads. The Boerne, Bulverde, and Helotes corridor is beautiful driving but the county roads out there throw more gravel than anywhere in Texas outside of West Texas oil country. If your weekend routes include 46, 3009, or 1863, you need coverage that extends past the front — rockers and rear quarters catch that debris.

Bird strikes and tree sap. The mesquite, live oak, and pecan canopies over San Antonio residential streets drop sap and pollen constantly, and mockingbirds and grackles nest in them by the thousands. Bird waste is corrosive to clearcoat within hours in Texas summer heat. Full body PPF gives you a barrier that wipes clean without eating into the paint underneath.

Choose protection based on the vehicle's condition, exposure and your ownership plans. Protection does not eliminate all damage or guarantee a repair saving or resale return; compare a written quote with your priorities.

Full body PPF pricing by vehicle type in San Antonio

Every full body PPF quote we write starts with the vehicle. Not every "SUV" is the same size, and not every "truck" wraps the same. Here's real pricing across the vehicle categories we install most often.

Request a quote for this vehicle category. Body size, panel geometry, finish, preparation and agreed coverage determine the installed total.

What film we install and why the film choice matters

Not all paint protection film is the same. We install the Pure paint protection film lineup because it hits every benchmark we require: self-healing at ambient temperature, hydrophobic top coat, 10-year manufacturer warranty, and edge stability past 5 years.

Pure Xtreme. The premium 8-mil self-healing tier. Aggressive self-heal in Texas heat — light swirl marks disappear within 30 seconds sitting in San Antonio summer sun. Hydrophobic top coat that beads water for the life of the film. Pure's warranty is 10 years against yellowing, cracking, hazing, and delamination. This is our default recommendation for luxury, exotic, and performance vehicles.

Pure Plus and Pure Ultra. The mid-tier of the Pure lineup. Slightly softer top coat that self-heals a hair faster in cool weather. 10-year warranty. Fewer edge visibility issues on tight body seams than the thicker premium tier — often the better pick on cars with complex compound curves. We recommend this for most daily-driver luxury sedans and SUVs where the customer wants proven protection without paying for the top-tier finish.

Pure Shield. The standard-tier Pure film. Same install quality, same 10-year manufacturer warranty backing, thinner profile. Right pick for high-impact zones on trucks and daily drivers when budget is the primary constraint.

Pure Stealth and Pure Matte. The matte-finish tier for satin-paint vehicles or drivers who want the matte look without doing a full color-change wrap. Same 10-year warranty as gloss Pure.

Compare the exact film or coating, preparation, coverage and written warranty terms in each quote. A price alone does not establish material quality or installation quality.

How the install actually works from drop-off to pickup

Full body PPF is the most labor-intensive service we perform. Here's the honest step-by-step so you know what to expect during your build.

Day 1 — Intake, decontamination, and clay bar. Vehicle arrives washed. We inspect and photograph every panel (this becomes your Build Log record). Then we chemical-decontaminate the paint (iron remover, tar remover, alkaline pre-wash) and clay-bar every panel. The clay bar removes bonded contaminants like brake dust, industrial fallout, and tree sap that a wash can't touch. This step is mandatory — film installed over contaminated paint will show every particle underneath forever.

Day 2 — Paint correction (if needed) and film cutting. If your paint has swirl marks, holograms, or light scratches, we single-stage paint-correct the panels before film goes on. This is included on new-car installs (usually 1–2 hours). On older or well-driven cars, deeper correction may be an add-on. Meanwhile, we cut every film panel from the Pure computer pattern database — every panel is pre-fit to your specific model year and trim.

Days 3–5 — Install. Panels are installed one at a time in a controlled environment: 68–72°F, humidity 40–55%, filtered air. Every panel is squeegeed from center to edge, edges are heat-tucked into panel gaps and seams, and every panel is inspected under directional LED lighting for micro-bubbles, dust particles, and stretch marks before we move to the next panel. Sedans typically finish in 4 days. Trucks and SUVs in 5. Complex builds (full body + track pack + ceramic on top) can run 6–7 days.

Final day — Cure, inspection, and delivery. After the last panel is installed, the vehicle rests overnight so the film adhesive tacks fully. The next morning we do the final walk-around with you, panel by panel, under bright lighting. You'll receive care instructions, your manufacturer warranty registration, and the full Build Log photo record.

Total time in our shop: 5–7 business days for a full body install. Rush jobs are available (48-hour turnaround for full front, 4-day for full body) at a 20% expedite premium.

How to care for full body PPF after install

PPF is dramatically more durable than paint, but the top-coat chemistry that makes it self-healing and hydrophobic still benefits from correct care. Here's the schedule we give every customer at pickup.

First 48 hours. No washing. No rain if avoidable. No harsh temperature swings (don't park in a hot garage overnight after driving in cold rain). The film adhesive is still tacking during this window. Small edge lifts during the first 48 hours are normal — they self-set as the adhesive cures.

First 7 days. Hand wash only using a pH-neutral automotive shampoo. No touchless car washes (the high-pressure jets can lift edges). No automated brush washes. No wax or sealant.

Ongoing. Hand wash every 2 weeks using the two-bucket method (one bucket with shampoo, one with clean rinse water, a grit guard in each). Dry with a microfiber drying towel or a filtered leaf blower. Do NOT use automatic car washes with brushes — they cause micro-scratches in the top coat that reduce self-healing performance over time.

Follow the selected product's care instructions. Coatings and films still need washing, inspection and maintenance; any professional maintenance or removal work is quoted separately.

Common mistakes to avoid: never use ammonia-based glass cleaner on the film (it degrades the top coat), never scrape ice off with a plastic scraper (it will slice the film), never park under a bird nest for more than 24 hours without cleaning bird waste immediately (film is protective but not indestructible against corrosive contamination given enough time), and never let brake dust bake on the wheels for more than a month (the iron oxide can transfer to painted lower panels and damage the film's top coat).

How full body PPF compares to ceramic coating (and why most customers do both)

The question we get most: "should I do full body PPF or ceramic coating?" The honest answer is that they solve different problems and the best answer for a car you plan to keep is usually both.

PPF is impact protection. Full body PPF stops rock chips, bug etch, scratches, minor abrasions, hail cracking on impact, key marks, and door dings against neighboring cars. Ceramic coating does none of those things. If a rock hits your paint at 70 mph, only PPF stops it.

Ceramic coating is chemical and UV protection. Ceramic coating creates a hard glass-like top layer that repels water, bug acids, tree sap, bird droppings, and industrial fallout. It also blocks UV that would otherwise oxidize paint. It does NOT stop rock chips — the coating is 2–3 microns thick, which is invisible to a piece of gravel.

Full body PPF alone. You get impact protection everywhere but no chemical top coat, meaning your car needs waxing or a topical sealant every 3–6 months to stay hydrophobic. The film's factory hydrophobic layer lasts 12–24 months before it dulls, then needs a topical spray to refresh.

Choose protection based on the vehicle's condition, exposure and your ownership plans. Protection does not eliminate all damage or guarantee a repair saving or resale return; compare a written quote with your priorities.

PPF and a compatible ceramic coating can be quoted together. Confirm the film, coating compatibility, preparation, covered surfaces, installation sequence and care requirements in writing. Neither treatment makes the vehicle maintenance-free.

What brands of paint protection film does PLM install?

We install the full Pure paint protection film lineup, all with 10-year manufacturer warranties:

  • Pure Xtreme — premium 8-mil self-healing tier, aggressive self-heal in Texas heat, our default for luxury and performance vehicles.
  • Pure Plus and Pure Ultra — mid-tier Pure films, softer top coat that self-heals faster in cool weather, best on cars with complex compound curves.
  • Pure Shield — standard-tier Pure film with the same 10-year warranty backing at a thinner profile.
  • Pure Stealth and Pure Matte — matte-finish tier for satin-paint vehicles or matte-look conversions.

We do NOT install unbranded or import PPF — those films fail in Texas sun within 12–24 months.

Can I get ceramic coating on top of full body PPF?

Ceramic coating is quoted for your vehicle, paint condition and preparation needs. Your written quote identifies the coating product, included preparation, treated surfaces, maintenance requirements and applicable warranty terms. Related: PPF vs ceramic coating.

How long does PPF last in Texas heat?

All three films we install carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, hazing, and delamination — and in real Texas installations they perform correctly for 8–12 years before showing any visible degradation. The warranty is transferable to a second owner if the vehicle sells within the warranty window.

What's the difference between full body PPF and a color change wrap?

PPF is quoted for your vehicle and selected coverage. Your written quote identifies the film, covered panels, edges, preparation and exclusions. Confirm partial versus full-panel coverage and any headlights or A-pillars separately. Vinyl wraps are quoted for your vehicle, selected material and finish. Your written quote identifies covered panels, door-jamb treatment, preparation, removal work and exclusions. Related: color change wraps guide.

Do I need to prep or clean my car before dropping it off for PPF?

Arrive with the car washed (a basic touchless car wash the morning of drop-off is fine). Do not apply any wax, sealant, or ceramic spray in the 30 days before install — those products interfere with film adhesion and we'll strip them off during our decontamination step. If you have roof racks, running boards, or aftermarket lower splitters that need to come off for full coverage, let us know at booking so we can plan.

Does full body PPF protect against door dings from other cars?

Full body PPF absorbs low-speed impacts including door dings from adjacent cars in parking lots — the 10-mil film thickness provides enough cushion to prevent paint deformation from most door contacts. It does NOT eliminate all dents; a hard swing can still deform the panel underneath, but the paint stays intact and no repaint is required. This is a real advantage over ceramic coating alone, which offers zero impact protection.

Can PPF be removed later without damaging the paint?

Yes — all three films we install are designed for clean removal within the 10-year warranty window. Removal takes 4–6 hours for a full body install and leaves no adhesive residue on original factory paint. On respray panels or panels with existing clearcoat issues, removal requires more care and can occasionally lift weakened clearcoat. We inspect for those risks before quoting a removal job.

Is PPF installed in a controlled environment?

Yes. All PPF work at PLM happens in a climate-controlled installation bay: 68–72°F, 40–55% humidity, filtered air with positive pressure to keep dust out. This is non-negotiable. PPF installed in open garages or driveways collects dust particles under the film that stay visible forever. If a shop can't tell you their install environment specs, that's a red flag.

Does full body PPF change the look of my car?

No — the Pure PPF lineup (Pure Xtreme, Pure Plus, Pure Ultra, Pure Shield) is all optically clear and adds no visible tint or haze. Under direct LED lighting you can see a very faint edge line where panels meet, but from any normal viewing distance the paint looks identical. If you want to convert glossy paint to matte/satin, that's a separate product — our matte finish service.
