Why San Antonio drivers need PPF more than most
San Antonio traffic is a controlled experiment in paint damage. 1604 and I-10 construction throws gravel year-round. 281 and 46 are lined with limestone quarries. Every summer thunderstorm carries hail. If you're driving anything you care about — a new Tesla, a Corvette, a lifted Bronco, a leased G-Wagon — the paint on your front end is on borrowed time.
Paint protection film (PPF) is a 6-10 mil urethane layer that goes over your existing clearcoat. Rocks bounce off it. Bug guts wipe off it. Bird droppings don't etch through it. And when it does take a hit hard enough to leave a mark, most modern films self-heal in warm sun within minutes — no polish, no repair, no visible damage to the paint underneath.
Choose protection based on the vehicle's condition, exposure and your ownership plans. Protection does not eliminate all damage or guarantee a repair saving or resale return; compare a written quote with your priorities.
The coverage packages we install
PPF is priced by coverage area. Here's what each package protects and who each one is for.
PPF is quoted for your vehicle and selected coverage. Your written quote identifies the film, covered panels, edges, preparation and exclusions. Confirm partial versus full-panel coverage and any headlights or A-pillars separately.
Track package + full-body upgrade (custom quote). Wheels, calipers, brake ducts, engine bay covers, roll bar padding — anything you can point at, we can film.
The films we install and why brand matters
Not all PPF is the same. Cheap film yellows, delaminates, orange-peels in sun, and telegraphs every impact permanently. Good film self-heals, stays optically clear for a decade, and pulls off cleanly if you ever remove it. Brand choice matters as much as installer choice.
Pure Xtreme — the premium 8-mil self-healing tier. 10-year manufacturer warranty, aggressive self-heal in Texas heat, and hydrophobic top coat that beads water for the life of the film. Our default recommendation for luxury and performance vehicles.
Pure Plus and Pure Ultra — professional-grade mid-tier films in the Pure lineup with a slightly softer top coat that self-heals a hair faster in cool weather. 10-year manufacturer warranty. The right pick for most daily-driver luxury sedans and SUVs where the customer wants proven protection without paying for the top-tier finish.
Pure Stealth and Pure Matte — the matte-finish tier for satin-paint vehicles or drivers who want the matte look without doing a full color-change wrap. Same 10-year warranty as gloss Pure. Deep, low-orange-peel finish that reads as factory satin.
Pure Shield — the standard-tier Pure film for high-impact zones on trucks and daily drivers where budget is the primary constraint. Same install quality, same warranty backing, thinner film profile.
Ceramic-infused PPF variants — top-coat chemistry that adds hydrophobic behavior and easier washing. Marginally more expensive; genuinely useful for daily-driven vehicles that will get regular hand washes.
We stock and install all three top-tier brands and select per vehicle, per use case, and per what film chemistry works best on the paint you're covering. Brand transparency: your written quote names the film, the pattern source, and the warranty carrier. No surprises.
How we install PPF — the details that separate a good install from a bad one
Every PPF install at PLM follows the same protocol. This is what a real install looks like:
- Full contact wash and decontamination. Two-bucket method, pH-neutral shampoo, iron dissolver, clay bar. Every impurity has to come off the paint before film goes on — anything trapped underneath becomes visible forever.
- Full paint inspection under LED. Panel by panel. Existing swirls, chips, or scratches get flagged and photographed. If correction is required for a clean install, we quote it separately and get your approval before doing the work.
- Computer-cut pattern from a licensed pattern library. Every panel gets a factory-matched pattern with the correct edge relief for door handles, emblems, gaps, and trim. No knives on paint. No razor cuts near clearcoat. Pattern matches your specific year/make/model/trim.
- Slip solution + tack solution mixing. Correct concentration for the film brand and the ambient shop conditions. This is where amateur installers cause bubbles and edge-lift — we mix per manufacturer spec, per bay temperature, per relative humidity.
- Install in a climate-controlled bay. 65–75°F, filtered air, controlled humidity. No dust in the film. No sun-warmed clearcoat causing the adhesive to grab before position is set. This is why San Antonio drivers should never accept an outdoor or open-bay PPF install.
- Panel-by-panel install with wrapped edges where possible. Wrapped edges (tucked into gaps, wrapped around fender lips) eliminate visible film lines. Cut edges are used only where a wrap would compromise fitment.
- 48-72 hour cure inside the shop before delivery. Adhesive needs cure time to reach full bond. You don't drive away with wet PPF — we hold the vehicle until the film has fully seated.
- Final walk-around under LED. Panel by panel with you present. Any edge that isn't perfect gets flagged and re-worked before you leave. Warranty document handed over.
- The Build Log throughout. Every step photographed and texted to you — drop-off, decon, pattern layout, install, cure, walk-around.

San Antonio neighborhoods and volume patterns
PLM's PPF volume comes from every corner of the DMA. What drivers protect varies by neighborhood:
- Stone Oak, Sonterra, The Dominion, La Cantera — highest volume of full-front installs on new Range Rovers, G-Wagons, Model X, Cayenne, Escalade, and Tahoe deliveries. Also the biggest cluster of 911, F-Type, and R8 track-package installs.
- The Rim & Cordillera Ranch — supercar and hypercar full-body installs. Aventador, Huracán, McLaren 720S, Ford GT, GT3 RS.
- Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, Olmos Park — classic-car restoration finish work. Air-cooled 911s, muscle cars, Bentleys, older Rolls-Royces.
- Boerne, Fair Oaks Ranch, Cordillera — full-front and track-package installs on the trucks and SUVs that hit hunting-lease roads and I-10 gravel corridors. Heavy Raptor, TRX, Land Cruiser, and 4Runner volume.
- New Braunfels, Spring Branch, Bulverde — off-road-oriented full-body installs on Broncos, Wranglers, lifted Tacomas.
- Helotes, Bandera, Kerrville — Hill Country daily drivers plus ranch-truck full-body armor.
- Schertz, Cibolo, Live Oak, Universal City — daily-driver partial and full-front installs on commuter sedans, F-150s, Silverados, and Wranglers.
- Downtown San Antonio, Southtown, King William — urban parking-damage packages: full front + rocker panels + door edges + door handle cups.
The studio is at 4949 N Loop 1604 W, Suite 430 — just outside The Rim. 15 minutes from Stone Oak, 25 from Alamo Heights, 25 from Boerne. Free customer parking on site. Ride-share pickup is easy from the studio.
PPF vs. ceramic coating vs. a full wrap — what actually goes where
The three protection products get confused constantly. Here's what each one actually does:
PPF is quoted for your vehicle and selected coverage. Your written quote identifies the film, covered panels, edges, preparation and exclusions. Confirm partial versus full-panel coverage and any headlights or A-pillars separately.
Ceramic coating is quoted for your vehicle, paint condition and preparation needs. Your written quote identifies the coating product, included preparation, treated surfaces, maintenance requirements and applicable warranty terms.
Vinyl wraps are quoted for your vehicle, selected material and finish. Your written quote identifies covered panels, door-jamb treatment, preparation, removal work and exclusions. Related: Color-change vinyl wrap.
PPF and a compatible ceramic coating can be quoted together. Confirm the film, coating compatibility, preparation, covered surfaces, installation sequence and care requirements in writing. Neither treatment makes the vehicle maintenance-free.
What PPF won't do — the honest downside
- PPF doesn't fix existing paint damage. It covers it. Chips, deep scratches, oxidation, water spots — all still there under the film. Correction or paint repair happens before install if you want it addressed.
- PPF isn't invisible on 100% of finishes. The best gloss film today is 99% optically clear and nearly impossible to see at normal viewing distance. Very light metallic paints (silver, champagne) can show a faint film edge in raking sunlight — installers who wrap edges where possible minimize this.
- PPF has a lifespan. 10-year manufacturer warranty for the top films is realistic. Beyond that, the film starts to yellow slightly, top-coat self-healing degrades, and adhesive can become harder to remove. Plan for removal and refresh around year 8-10 on daily drivers.
- PPF doesn't stop major hail. A hailstone the size of a golf ball at terminal velocity will dent through the film. PPF absorbs and dissipates small-to-medium impacts (marble-sized hail, small rocks, road debris). For serious hail country, PPF is a supplement to garage parking — not a replacement.
- PPF can be damaged by improper wash technique. Automatic touch-tunnel car washes with aggressive detergents will slowly degrade the top coat. Hand wash or touchless wash preserves the film through the full warranty period.
