The San Antonio ceramic coating problem
Every ceramic coating shop in San Antonio quotes you a price. Almost none of them quote you the same thing.
The shop assesses the existing finish before quoting preparation and paint correction. The written scope specifies any decontamination, polishing and surface-specific treatment; these are not assumed to be included.
Central Texas paint has three enemies: UV load (San Antonio averages 220+ sun days and hits 100°F+ for two months of the year), hard water (Edwards Aquifer water leaves mineral spots that etch through wax in a single wash cycle), and hill-country grit (calcium-rich dust from 1604 and 281 construction that bonds to paint in the summer heat). A real ceramic coating solves all three. A cheap one solves none of them.
Confirm the selected product, preparation, coverage and installed total in a vehicle-specific written quote before work begins.
What your coating quote specifies
Ceramic coating isn't one product. It's a category, and the tier determines what the coating actually does and how long it lasts. Here's what we install at PLM and the honest guidance on which one you need.
Ceramic coating is quoted for your vehicle, paint condition and preparation needs. Your written quote identifies the coating product, included preparation, treated surfaces, maintenance requirements and applicable warranty terms.

The prep is 80% of the job (this is where San Antonio shops cut corners)

- Full decontamination wash — two-bucket method, pH-neutral shampoo, foam pre-soak. No dish soap. No wash-and-wax combos.
- Iron removal — chemical iron dissolver applied panel by panel to strip embedded brake dust and rail dust. This is where San Antonio drivers get killed: 1604 and I-10 construction leaves iron in your paint that a wash cannot touch.
- Clay bar decontamination — mechanical removal of anything the iron dissolver couldn't chemically bond with (tree sap, insect residue, overspray).

- Panel wipe with dedicated coating prep solvent — strips every trace of polishing oils, waxes, and residues so the coating bonds directly to bare clearcoat.
- Coating application — done in a climate-controlled bay at 65–75°F and controlled humidity. Layer counts match manufacturer spec, cure times are respected, and every panel is inspected under multiple angles of LED before we call it done.
- Cure time before delivery — you don't drive away with a wet coating. We hold the vehicle for the manufacturer-specified cure window before you pick it up.
You'll see the paint under bright LED before we start correction, and you'll see it again before coating goes on. Every step is photographed and texted to you through the Build Log. Nothing gets skipped, because there's a photo record of every step.

How ceramic coating handles Central Texas conditions
The reason ceramic coating matters more in San Antonio than in most US markets:
Paint care remains important in strong sunlight and heat. Ask for product-specific evidence behind any UV or chemical-resistance claim; no fixed extension of clearcoat life is promised.
Hard-water mineral spotting. San Antonio Water System water carries 180–260 ppm of dissolved minerals — well above the national average. When water dries on paint (from a rain shower, a lawn sprinkler, or a home wash), it leaves calcium and silica deposits that etch into unprotected clearcoat within a week. Ceramic coating's hydrophobic surface causes water to bead and roll off before it can dry, and any residue that does form wipes off with a damp microfiber instead of requiring polish.
Construction dust and caliche. The 1604, 281, and Highway 46 construction corridors kick up calcium-carbonate dust that bonds to warm paint. Under ceramic coating, that dust rinses off with a low-pressure wash. On uncoated paint it requires clay bar or chemical decon.
Insect strikes and tree sap. Hill Country cedar and live oak drop sap that permanently etches unprotected clearcoat within 24 hours in summer heat. Ceramic makes sap and bug guts wipe off in one pass.
Hail chip risk. Ceramic doesn't stop hail — that's what PPF does. But a coated vehicle recovers from a light hail exposure with just a wash, where an uncoated vehicle picks up etching from the dust and grit that hail carries down.
What ceramic coating won't do
Every ceramic coating page on the internet sells you the upside. Here's the honest downside so you know what you're not paying for.
- Ceramic coating does not stop rock chips. A pea-sized rock at 60 mph will chip your paint through any ceramic coating on the market. That's what paint protection film (PPF) is for.
- Ceramic coating does not prevent swirl marks from poor washing. Follow the selected product's care instructions and confirm any maintenance visits and charges in your quote.
- Ceramic coating does not fix existing paint defects. It locks in what's underneath. If your paint has swirls, oxidation, or scratches, paint correction is required first — which is why our packages include it rather than treating it as an upsell.
- Warranty coverage and duration depend on the exact product installed. Confirm the written terms, exclusions, maintenance requirements, registration and any separate workmanship coverage before approving the work. Follow the selected product's care instructions. Coatings and films still need washing, inspection and maintenance; any professional maintenance or removal work is quoted separately.
- Ceramic coating is not scratch-proof. The pencil-hardness scale (2H, 9H, 10H) tops out at 10H — softer than most rocks and shopping cart edges. Coating adds resistance, not immunity.
If a shop is telling you their coating stops rock chips or is scratch-proof, they're selling you a fantasy. We'll tell you what the product actually does and what stack of products (ceramic + PPF, ceramic + window tint, ceramic + wheel coating) gets you the outcome you actually want.
