What a color change wrap actually is

A color change wrap is full-adhesive vinyl film applied over every painted panel on your vehicle — hood, roof, doors, quarter panels, fenders, mirrors, and bumpers. Done properly, it also wraps into the jambs, door edges, and behind badges, so when someone opens a door or looks under the hood, the new color goes with it.

The factory paint underneath is untouched. Two to seven years later, when you're ready to sell or change the color again, we peel the film off and the paint underneath is exactly as it was the day you dropped it off. No respray, no color-match headache, no resale hit.

Color change wraps are not the same as color-change PPF. Wrap is thinner, cheaper, and doesn't stop rock chips. PPF is thicker, self-healing, and protects the paint underneath while changing the color. We'll walk you through which is right for your car at consultation.

Finish types — what people actually order

We stock premium films only: 3M 2080 series, Avery Supreme Wrapping Film, Inozetek Super Gloss, and KPMF K88700. Cheap films are the reason wraps get a bad reputation.

  • Matte and satin — the most-requested finish. Satin black, satin frozen white, and satin metallic gray outsell everything else combined. Hides swirl marks. Reads more expensive than gloss on modern SUVs and coupes.
  • Gloss — the showroom finish. Closest visual to a factory respray. Ordered most on European sedans and 6-figure builds.
  • Chrome and satin chrome — the high-visibility option. Silver chrome, black chrome, rose gold chrome. Premium film cost, premium install cost.
  • Color-flip / shift-color — films that read one color at one angle and a different color at another. Statement builds only. Not for the daily driver who wants to blend in.
  • Custom prints and one-off colors — digitally printed film for one-of-one builds. Longer lead time, quoted per project.

Color change wrap quote considerations

Every quote is up front. What we quote is what you pay. Bands below are starting points; final cost depends on film choice, panel disassembly, and specialty features.

  • Coupe or sedan full color change · Vehicle-specific quote
  • SUV or truck full color change · Vehicle-specific quote
  • Chrome or specialty finish full color change · Vehicle-specific quote
  • Roof only · Vehicle-specific quote
  • Hood or trunk only · Vehicle-specific quote
  • Mirror caps · Vehicle-specific quote
  • Full color change with rock-chip protection: see color-change PPF pricing

If you want the wrap look plus rock-chip protection, we can install color-change PPF instead. Same visual, thicker film, no impact damage — but it's roughly 2–3× the price. We'll cost both at consultation so you can pick honestly.

The build process — what shortcut we don't take

A full color change wrap is a 3–5 day build. Here's what separates a wrap that lasts five years from a wrap that peels at the edges in six months:

  1. Full disassembly. We remove door handles, mirrors, badges, and often bumpers to wrap film into the seams, not just up to them. Shops that don't disassemble leave visible seams and edges that lift within a year.
  2. Panel-by-panel decontamination. Every panel gets an isopropyl-alcohol wipe-down before film touches paint. Contaminated paint = adhesive failure.
  3. Post-heat cure. Every edge and seam gets a controlled heat pass after install to lock the film's memory. Skipped by most volume shops.
  4. Post-install inspection. Every panel checked under bright shop lights for lift, bubbles, or contamination. Fixed before you see the car.

You can watch progress. We'll send text updates through the build with photos.

Warranty and lifespan

3M 2080 and Avery Supreme carry manufacturer warranties of 5–7 years on vertical surfaces (doors, quarter panels) and 3–4 years on horizontal surfaces (hood, roof, trunk) exposed to Texas sun. We stand behind our install with a 3-year workmanship warranty on edge lift and seam separation.

Real-world lifespan on a garage-kept Texas vehicle: 5–7 years before you'd consider removal. A daily driver parked outside in full sun: 3–5 years.

San Antonio neighborhoods we wrap for

PLM's studio is at 4949 N Loop 1604 W, Suite 430 — just outside The Rim. Our color-change wrap volume comes from every corner of the DMA:

  • Stone Oak, Sonterra & The Dominion — the biggest volume of exotic and near-exotic color changes. Satin PPF-style greens on 911s, satin metallic finishes on G-Wagons, matte military-green Wranglers, chrome-shift Model X.
  • The Rim & La Cantera — new-vehicle color changes off the dealer lot. Common: satin white on Tesla Model 3, satin black on Model Y, chrome-shift finishes on delivered Cybertrucks.
  • Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills & Olmos Park — classic-car color changes and full aesthetic refreshes on air-cooled 911s, older Bentleys, and restoration builds. This crowd wants gloss or subtle satin, not extreme colors.
  • Boerne, Fair Oaks Ranch & Cordillera Ranch — ranch trucks and lifted-SUV wraps in matte military green, matte tan, satin black. Owners want a functional aesthetic that hides trail dust and doesn't show scratches.
  • New Braunfels, Bulverde & Spring Branch — off-road-oriented full wraps on Broncos, 4Runners, Tacomas, and Wranglers. Popular: matte forest green, satin gunmetal, and desert-tan finishes.
  • Schertz, Cibolo, Live Oak & Universal City — daily-driver color changes on commuter sedans and trucks. Popular: satin black, satin white, and gloss color changes on lease returns being refreshed for private-party sale.
  • Downtown, Southtown & King William — urban aesthetic wraps in extreme colors and shift-color finishes. This is where chameleon and prismatic finishes get requested most.
  • Helotes, Hollywood Park & Leon Springs — Tesla and EV color changes. Fastest-growing volume segment in the last 18 months.

The wrap films we install and why film choice matters

Vinyl wrap film ranges from consumer-grade (short lifespan, orange-peel finish, hard to install cleanly) to professional cast vinyl (long lifespan, factory-smooth finish, designed for compound curves). PLM installs only the top-tier cast films. Brand-by-brand comparison:

3M 2080 series — the industry benchmark for gloss, satin, and matte solid colors. 12-year manufacturer warranty on unprinted films. Best-in-class conformability for compound curves (roof, hood, fender flares). What most PLM builds use as the primary color.

Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film (SWF) — comparable performance to 3M 2080 with a different color library. Especially strong satin metallic finishes and matte metallic finishes. Preferred for satin-metallic gold, satin blue metallic, and matte metallic gray builds.

KPMF K88000 and K71400 series — the specialty finish leader. Best chameleon (color-shift) films in the industry, best matte iridescent finishes, and the deepest color-flip prismatic finishes. What we install when a customer wants a "purple that shifts to green" or a "gold-to-purple flip" finish.

Hexis and Arlon — European-manufactured films used for specific finishes not offered by 3M or Avery. Popular for satin metallic red, satin bronze, and select gloss neon finishes.

A written wrap quote should identify material, panel coverage, preparation, edge treatment and exclusions. Compare the same scope across shops.

Living with a wrap in San Antonio — the care schedule

Wrap care isn't complicated, but ignoring it will cut your wrap's lifespan in half. Here's the actual schedule.

First 48-72 hours after install: No washing. No touching. Adhesive is still setting.

Ongoing wash schedule:

  • Hand wash only. Two-bucket method, pH-neutral shampoo, microfiber mitt. Cast vinyl and its adhesive are more sensitive to harsh chemicals than clearcoat. Wash-and-wax combo products leave residue that dulls the finish.
  • Skip automatic car washes entirely. Touch-tunnel brushes catch film edges and cause lifting. Even touchless automatic washes use aggressive pre-soak chemicals that degrade vinyl adhesive over time. Hand wash only, every time.
  • No pressure-washing at close range. Anything closer than 12 inches from a film edge can lift the edge. If you use a pressure washer, stay 18+ inches away from every seam and edge.
  • Dry with a plush microfiber towel or leaf blower. Never chamois, never squeegee.
  • Address contaminants immediately. Bird droppings, tree sap, and dead bugs will etch through vinyl faster than they etch through clearcoat. Wash the affected area within 24 hours.
  • Vinyl wraps are quoted for your vehicle, selected material and finish. Your written quote identifies covered panels, door-jamb treatment, preparation, removal work and exclusions.
  • Wax and sealant products — be careful. Most traditional waxes are safe on gloss vinyl but destroy matte and satin finishes (they leave a permanent gloss haze). Only use wrap-specific products or wrap-approved ceramic sprays on matte/satin. Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic and Chemical Guys Wrap Detailer are safe options.
  • Parking — garage when possible. UV exposure is the #1 lifespan killer. A wrapped vehicle garaged overnight will outlast an identical wrapped vehicle parked outside by 2-3 years.
  • Fuel spills at the pump. Wipe up immediately with a microfiber. Fuel dissolves vinyl adhesive.

Do this and a 3M 2080 wrap will hit its 7-year manufacturer warranty comfortably. Skip it and you'll see edge lift and color fade within 3-4 years.

Color change wraps — frequently asked

Real questions from real San Antonio drivers considering a color change wrap.

How much does a full color change wrap cost in San Antonio?
Vinyl wraps are quoted for your vehicle, selected material and finish. Your written quote identifies covered panels, door-jamb treatment, preparation, removal work and exclusions.
How long does a vinyl wrap last?
Professional cast vinyl carries a 7-12 year manufacturer warranty. Real-world San Antonio lifespan: 5-7 years on daily drivers parked outside, 8-12 years on garaged vehicles. Horizontal panels (hood, roof, trunk) typically fail 1-2 years before vertical panels. Ceramic coating on top extends life.
Does wrapping my car damage the paint?
No — professional cast vinyl doesn't damage factory clearcoat and removes cleanly within design life. Film adhesive is engineered for automotive paint. Damage happens only if the underlying paint was already compromised, or the film is left on 7+ years past design life.
Can I wrap over existing paint damage?
Wrap covers minor imperfections but telegraphs deep scratches, dents, and heavy oxidation. Any imperfection larger than a pinhead will show through or cause film failure there. Address significant damage before wrap install.
How is wrap different from paint or PPF?
Compare written quotes for the same vehicle and coverage. Vinyl, PPF and repainting serve different goals, and preparation, finish selection and removal work can materially affect the total. No fixed percentage saving is promised.
Can wrap be removed later?
Vinyl wraps are quoted for your vehicle, selected material and finish. Your written quote identifies covered panels, door-jamb treatment, preparation, removal work and exclusions.
Do you wrap chrome and matte finishes?
Yes to both. Chrome: spectacular but shorter warranty (2-3 years) due to UV sensitivity. Matte: standard 7-12 year warranty but requires wrap-specific care (no traditional waxes).
How long does a full wrap install take?
3-5 business days for a typical full color change on sedans/coupes. 5-7 days on SUVs/trucks. Chrome, chameleon, or prismatic finishes add 1-2 days. Includes trim disassembly, decontamination, wrap install, reassembly, LED QC walk-around.
Do you wrap door jambs, engine bay, and interior trim?
Vinyl wraps are quoted for your vehicle, selected material and finish. Your written quote identifies covered panels, door-jamb treatment, preparation, removal work and exclusions.
Can I add ceramic coating over a color change wrap?
Vinyl wraps are quoted for your vehicle, selected material and finish. Your written quote identifies covered panels, door-jamb treatment, preparation, removal work and exclusions.
What's the difference between gloss, satin, and matte wraps?
Gloss: mirror-smooth, mimics factory paint. Satin: soft sheen, colors read slightly darker, less glare. Matte: zero reflection, flat military/stealth aesthetic, requires more care.
Do wraps affect insurance or resale value?
Insurance typically unchanged (paint isn't modified). Notify your carrier. Resale often improves because original paint is preserved perfectly under the wrap — remove before sale to reveal factory-perfect paint.
Where is PLM located and what areas do you serve?
