Why R1T owners choose PPF
The R1T is built for exactly the driving that generates the most paint damage — overland trips, gravel Forest Service roads, kayak and mountain-bike loading, and the daily gear-tunnel access that touches painted panels dozens of times per week. Rivian’s paint colors also skew rare: Rivian Blue, El Cap Granite, Limestone, Compass Yellow, and Red Canyon are all body-shop headaches to color-match if a panel needs work.
Choose protection based on the vehicle's condition, exposure and your ownership plans. Protection does not eliminate all damage or guarantee a repair saving or resale return; compare a written quote with your priorities.
Paint protection film is the fix. Full-front stops the rock strikes on adventure trips. Gear-tunnel door PPF stops the daily gear-loading damage that turns a two-year-old R1T into a body shop bill. Rocker and wheel-arch PPF stops the tire spray from off-road tires. For a truck used the way an R1T is built to be used, PPF is essential from day one.
Which panels we recommend on an R1T
Full front (baseline): front bumper, full hood (including the flush hood-scoop area), full fenders, mirror caps, and both headlight housings (the R1T’s vertical LED bar takes a lot of bug impact and deserves film coverage).
Gear-tunnel doors: we film both gear-tunnel doors as dedicated pieces. This is the single most-important R1T-specific PPF request — every gear-loading session and every use of the tunnel-door step touches these panels, and they scuff faster than any highway rock strike ever will.
Rockers, A-pillars, and lower fender flares: essential on any R1T that sees off-road use. Rocker PPF absorbs trail rock strikes. A-pillar coverage absorbs bug and debris impact on the highway back home. Lower fender flares take spray from the off-road tires directly.
Tailgate and bedsides: for R1T owners who use the truck as a truck — loading tools, gear, or firewood — we recommend bedside and tailgate top-edge PPF. Rivian’s bed is short but the paint on those panels is exactly as hard to match as the rest of the body.
Full body: the right answer for Quad-Motor buyers, for Rivian Blue and El Cap Granite paint (the two most difficult colors to match), and for any R1T destined for regular overland or Baja-style use.

R1T pricing reflects the unique gear-tunnel door work, the rear quarter shape (which requires more film-piece planning than a conventional pickup), and the additional care needed on Rivian Blue and El Cap Granite finishes. Every install is self-healing film with a 10-year warranty. See the full PPF service page for film brand tiers.
The R1T build process
Every R1T gets a wet-mount install. Front bumper comes off for full-front jobs to wrap the top edge under the hood shut line without a visible cut. Headlights come off for clean edge tucks around the vertical LED bar. Mirrors come off. Gear-tunnel doors are removed and filmed on the bench, with edges tucked so no seam is visible when the doors are closed.
The R1T’s rear quarter panel curves in a way that no conventional pickup shares — the panel wraps up and over the wheel arch into the bedside. On full-body installs, we plan piece placement to keep every seam either on a body line, an edge tuck, or a shut line. No seam ends up on a visible flat surface.
Cure time is 7 to 10 days. During install, The Build Log texts photos to your phone at every stage: bumper off, gear-tunnel door film, panel-by-panel layout, edges tucked, reassembly, final walk-around. If you’re building the truck for regular overland use, tell us at drop-off — we’ll add thicker film to the lower rockers and gear-tunnel step where the worst wear happens.
Ceramic coating on top of PPF
PPF and ceramic coating solve different problems on the R1T. PPF is impact and daily-use protection: rocks, gear-tunnel scuffs, tire spray. Ceramic on top is hydrophobic gloss and wash-easier surface tension — especially valuable on Rivian’s pearl and metallic colors, which show water spots and swirl marks faster than solid finishes.
PPF and a compatible ceramic coating can be quoted together. Confirm the film, coating compatibility, preparation, covered surfaces, installation sequence and care requirements in writing. Neither treatment makes the vehicle maintenance-free. Related: ceramic coating; PPF vs. ceramic coating.
