Why Universal City drivers come to PLM
LLumar window tint starting at $295. All LLumar lines are available. Your written quote confirms the exact series, shade, vehicle coverage, removal charges and installed total.
Universal City (78148) sits east of San Antonio adjacent to Randolph Air Force Base — a heavy military and civil-service population, plus a lot of daily commuting on IH-35 and Loop 1604. Ceramic tint plus a windshield strip is the standard package we quote here.
Ceramic tint blocks infrared heat and 99% of UV without any metal. On a Corvette, Mustang GT, Challenger, or Camaro, that means keeping the interior from cooking in July. On a family SUV or a lifted Silverado, it means cooler cabin temps for kids in the back row and no radar / camera interference. On any of them, no purple fading through years of Texas sun.
For a value-tier option, ask which exact film is available. LLumar ATC is dyed film, not carbon; compare its specifications and price with the ceramic option in your written quote.
Texas VLT law, quick reference
The following summary is based on Texas DPS window-tint guidance. Film shade alone is not a compliance test.
- Front side windows: at least 25% VLT and no more than 25% luminous reflectance, measured with film and original glass together, unless an applicable exemption applies.
- Rear side windows: exempt from these Texas tint restrictions; this is not a sedan-versus-SUV distinction.
- Rear window: unrestricted only with an outside mirror on each side giving a view at least 200 feet behind the vehicle. Without those mirrors, at least 25% VLT and no more than 25% reflectance apply.
- Windshield: the strip must be above the AS-1 line; if there is no line, it must end five inches below the top. Combined strip/glass VLT must be at least 25%, reflectance no more than 25%; no red, amber or blue. Clear, untinted UV film is separately allowed anywhere on the windshield.
For a medical exception to the front-side darkness requirement, DPS calls for a signed statement from a licensed physician or licensed optometrist identifying the driver or occupant and explaining the medical necessity. Keep the statement in the vehicle for law-enforcement review. DPS stopped issuing Window Tint Exemption Certificates on January 1, 2019. A customer-signed shop waiver is not a medical exception or permission to use otherwise noncompliant tint on public roads.
Verify the exact film, glass and installation before choosing a shade. A shop waiver or a nominal film percentage does not guarantee legality. Read the complete Texas tint guide.
Confirm your tint quote
Request a written quote identifying the film manufacturer, series, shade, windows covered and installed price. Confirm existing-film removal, taxes, preparation, availability, completion estimate and warranty terms before authorizing work. Do not compare different film categories or coverage packages as if they were the same product.
Review the package pricing page. Confirm any offer's exact product, coverage and eligibility in writing.
The Universal City drop-off
Drop the car at our studio at 4949 N Loop 1604 W, Suite 430. From Universal City and Randolph AFB, take Loop 1604 West — it’s a straight run around the loop, roughly 25 to 30 minutes off-peak depending on where on 1604 you enter.
Most window tint builds finish in about two hours. Every build comes with The Build Log — real-time photos texted to your phone through drop-off, prep, install, and final walk-around. Grab lunch at The Rim or La Cantera while we work — both are less than ten minutes from the studio.
We also install paint protection film, ceramic coating, and vinyl wraps at the same studio — ask about bundled pricing at drop-off.
Dyed, carbon and ceramic are different
Dyed, carbon and ceramic are different product categories. LLumar identifies ATC as dyed window film, not carbon. ATC uses an integrated charcoal dye for color stability, and LLumar states that it blocks more than 99% of UV rays.
LLumar's ceramic range includes CTX, IRX, FormulaOne Pinnacle and FormulaOne Stratos. Compare the exact series and shade for heat rejection, visible light transmission and reflectance; the category name is not a performance specification.
Ask PLM to confirm the exact film available for your vehicle in the written quote. A carbon-tint comparison is not a representation that ATC is carbon or that every listed manufacturer series is currently stocked.
Ceramic film can reduce solar heat entering through treated glass, but the result depends on the exact film, shade, glass, coverage and conditions. Compare total solar energy rejection (TSER) for the same test basis. Infrared-rejection figures can use different wavelength ranges and are not interchangeable with TSER. No fixed cabin-temperature reduction, cool-down time, energy saving or EV-range gain is promised.

Local notes for Universal City
- Common vehicles from 78148: Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, Toyota Tacoma, Honda Civic and Accord, Jeep Wrangler, plus a healthy population of newer Teslas from the Randolph area.
- Randolph AFB and JBSA installations don't have tint restrictions beyond Texas state law — you're fine with a legal 25% VLT install for on-base driving.
- PCS-move military clients get a discount off the standard board price if they're within 30 days of relocation orders. Ask when you book — we need to see the orders to apply it.
- Drive: about 25 minutes to the studio via Loop 1604 East (northern half of the loop) — the drive is longer than the mileage suggests because 1604 slows through Live Oak.
- Universal City insider note: the summer commute on IH-35 south into downtown at 8am is direct sun into the driver's window. Ceramic film on the driver's side is the single best purchase we can recommend for that commute.
