Start with three priorities, not a package
Write down what concerns you most before asking for a price. Be specific enough that an installer can point to the area on your actual vehicle.
- Road-facing paint: “I want to discuss the bumper, hood and front fenders.”
- Everyday contact: “I want to assess the painted loading area and the places we reach when opening the doors.”
- Overall appearance: “I care about the finish of the whole car and want to understand the remaining uncovered areas.”
These are examples of buyer priorities, not a claim that every surface needs film or is suitable for the same product. Ask the installer which requests are appropriate and which would add cost without addressing your concern.
PLM offers front-end, full-body and selected-area discussions, with suitability and the exact panel list assessed for the vehicle. (PLM PPF coverage) If you are still deciding whether wider coverage is worth the extra spend, start with the separate full-front versus full-body buying guide, then return here to define the job.
Build a panel list you can actually approve
Use these rows as questions for the quote, not as promised package inclusions. Mark each area “include,” “leave out” or “needs assessment,” and ask the shop to resolve every uncertain item before work begins.
| Area to discuss | What your written scope should answer |
|---|---|
| Hood | Whole hood or a partial section? Where will any visible boundary sit? |
| Front bumper and fenders | Which painted sections are included? Are complex openings and small trim pieces separate? |
| Mirror caps | Painted caps only? Which edges or other materials are excluded? |
| Rockers and lower doors | Entire panels or selected sections? Where does each piece stop? |
| Doors, rear quarters and rear bumper | Included, excluded or separately quoted? Are any painted sections outside the plan? |
| Painted roof and pillars | Which painted areas are included? Keep glass, seals and other materials separate. |
| Loading ledge, door cups and door edges | Suitable for the chosen material? Separate pieces, full-panel work or no installation recommended? |
| Lights, glass, carbon fiber and trim | Is there a suitable product, and what separate limitations or exclusions apply? |
Do not assume “full body” includes every surface or that an installer’s “full front” includes lights and pillars; PLM’s current main service page requires those additions to be confirmed in the written scope. (PLM PPF scope) If an important item is missing from the quote, ask for clarification rather than treating the package name as an answer.
Make visible edges part of the decision
Ask the installer to point out where the film is expected to end on your vehicle. If a partial-hood line would bother you, say so before comparing prices.
PLM notes that edges, seams or texture may remain visible and that clear, matte, satin and colored films can affect appearance differently. (PLM finish guidance) Review the actual finish sample and proposed boundaries; do not expect a wide photograph to answer every close-up question.
Consider adding this line to your request: “Please identify the areas where a film boundary will remain visible.” That makes appearance an explicit part of the scope rather than a surprise at pickup.
Tell the shop what has happened to the paint
Mention known bodywork, repainting, existing film and any areas of concern. Ask the shop to distinguish the preparation included in the quote from additional work that requires your approval.
PLM assesses paint condition and repair history, and its service guidance says paint correction is not automatically included. (PLM preparation process) Do not read a PPF quote as a promise to repair every existing defect.
If the proposed material is PURE PPF, its published warranty applies to original-equipment clear-coat surfaces and excludes repainted surfaces and specified non-painted materials, including headlights, taillights, chrome and carbon fiber. (PURE PPF warranty) That is why “can film be applied?” and “what warranty would apply?” need separate answers.
Ask what happens after damage
Film protection and warranty coverage are not the same thing. PURE PPF’s manufacturer warranty excludes normal wear, road-debris damage and other listed causes even though protective film is intended to help reduce certain surface damage. (PURE PPF warranty, PLM PPF limits)
Before approving the job, ask:
- Assessment: Who should I contact if I find lifting, a mark or impact damage?
- Replacement: How would the affected piece or panel be assessed and quoted?
- Coverage: Which issues fall under the manufacturer’s terms, and what separate workmanship terms apply?
- Care: What washing products, methods and timing should I follow?
Ask for those answers in writing. A long warranty term should not be read as free repair for anything that happens to the car.
Plan the shop visit after the scope is clear
PLM serves Alamo Heights customers from its San Antonio studio at 4949 N Loop 1604 W, Suite 430; this guide is not an announcement of an Alamo Heights branch. (PLM Alamo Heights service information) Confirm the actual appointment and completion estimate before arranging drop-off or alternate transportation.
The current PPF process makes timing dependent on the vehicle, preparation, film and coverage, and asks customers to agree on Build Log photo updates beforehand. (PLM installation process) Ask what updates you can expect and how pickup readiness will be confirmed, rather than assuming a same-day finish or automatic real-time reporting.
Why consider PLM?
Start with relevant work and a written process. PLM’s Our Work collection includes a Porsche Cayenne Turbo full-PPF project, and its PPF service page describes a quote covering film, panels, preparation, installed total and applicable terms. (PLM Our Work, PLM written-quote process)
Use that as a reason to have a detailed conversation, not as a substitute for inspecting the proposed finish and understanding the scope. The right shop should help you decide what matters on your car, including where you choose not to spend.
Send a better quote request
You can use this starting point:
My vehicle is [year, make, model and trim]. I am considering [clear, matte, satin or color-change film] and want to discuss [named panels]. My main concern is [what I want to address]. Known repainting, existing film or other finish history: [details or unknown]. Please identify included panels, visible boundaries, exclusions, preparation, installed total, timing and applicable warranty terms.
If you are undecided, send your priorities rather than selecting a package at random. Ask for a focused option and clearly priced additions, then choose only the coverage you understand and value.
